Adding and viewing receipts on costs

Attach a photo or PDF receipt to any cost. Photos are compressed automatically, both parents can view a receipt, and only the parent who logged the cost can change it — within 3 days.

Any cost can carry an optional receipt — a photo or a PDF — as supporting evidence. Receipts are part of the shared record, so both parents can view every receipt. Only the parent who logged a cost can add, replace, or remove its receipt.

Adding a receipt

  1. Go to Costs and click Log cost (or open a cost you logged and choose Edit).
  2. In the Receipt box, drop a file or click to browse.
  3. A preview appears so you can check you picked the right file. For photos you'll also see the optimised size, e.g. Optimised 3.1 MB → 240 KB.
  4. Click Review & log (or Review changes) to save — the receipt uploads as part of saving.

Supported files

  • Photos — JPG, PNG, or WebP. Upload any size; we automatically shrink large photos in your browser before they're sent, so they stay small without you doing anything.
  • PDFs — up to 4 MB. PDFs aren't compressed, so for a large multi-page scan, photographing the receipt is usually smaller and quicker.

Other file types (including GIF and SVG) aren't accepted. If your iPhone saves photos as HEIC, the upload step normally converts them to JPG automatically.

Viewing a receipt

Open any cost from the Costs list — entries with a receipt show a small paperclip. In the cost's detail view, an image receipt is shown inline; click it to open it full-size in a new tab. A PDF shows a View receipt link instead. This works for both parents, whoever logged the cost.

Replacing or removing a receipt

Open the cost you logged and choose Edit. From there you can pick a new file to replace the current one, or click Remove. As with editing the cost itself, this is only possible within 3 days of when the cost was recorded — after that the entry locks, including its receipt, to keep the shared record tamper-proof. The other parent can always view a receipt but can never change it.

Your privacy

  • Receipts are stored privately and only ever shown to the two parents in your household, through short-lived secure links — never on a public address.
  • When we shrink a photo we also strip its hidden metadata, including any GPS location your camera may have saved into the image.

Trouble uploading?

If a save finishes but you see a note that the receipt didn't attach, your cost was still saved — just open it again within the 3-day window and re-add the receipt. If it keeps failing, get in touch via the contact page with the file type and size.
